Evan HoweWhy Necessary?
In September 2019, shortly after Passenger’s fifth anniversary, we decided to launch a new roasting brand called Necessary Coffee.

Necessary Coffee Roasters was founded in 2019, by the team behind Passenger. We created Necessary in the hope that roasting great coffees a little differently would appeal to a new customer base, enabling us to expand our annual buying from Passenger’s closest producer partners around the world.

Because Passenger primarily focuses on light roasts, its menus are obviously best positioned to serve those who enjoy lightly-developed coffees! And, as proud as we are of the light, bright coffees on Passenger’s menu, we celebrate the fact that many coffee lovers prefer a richer, more roast-driven flavor profile. Necessary was intentionally launched as a distinct brand to roast beautiful coffees from our Foundational partners in a more developed style. It exists for folks who love specialty coffee but prefer a bolder cup than Passenger offers.
While there have been plenty of twists and turns since day one, Necessary’s core ethos has remained the same: Strong Partners Make Rich Coffee. By investing in farmer-focused partnerships with each cup of Necessary, we actively pursue a more sustainable future.
