Ivan Gutierrez SL28

$48.50
Notes of Toffee, Cranberry, Citrus
This is our fifth consecutive year presenting SL28 and gesha separations from award-winning producer Ivan Gutierrez. We had the opportunity to visit Ivan last fall and stay on his farm, La Esmeralda, where we learned a bit more about how both weather challenges and beneficial farm investments have impacted the flavor profile of his coffees over the years. As we’ve come to expect, the plant genetics of this classic Kenyan SL28 variety shine through in this coffee with flavors of tart cranberry, toffee, and citrus peel alongside subtle spices and botanicals in the finish.

Ivan Gutierrez SL28 2025

This microlot from Don Ivan’s 2025 harvest is a single variety separation of SL28, an arabica variety most famously associated with Kenyan coffee production. The name “SL28” is a reference to this variety’s interesting history: “SL” refers to Scott Agricultural Laboratories, a coffee research center that was established in Kenya by the British Colonial government in 1922 with the goal of identifying coffee varieties that were high yielding while exhibiting good resistance to drought and disease. In the 1930’s, the team at ‘Scott Labs’ selected coffee trees from all across Africa and gave each tree a distinct number following the prefix “SL”. Of all the trees selected at this time, #28 exhibited the most desirable balance of yield, cup quality, and disease resistance, and the rest is history.
