Named after his first daughter, Margarita, finca Las Margaritas was established by producer Emmanuel Solís in 2019 in the Santa Maria district of Dota. In addition to producing prized varieties like SL28 and gesha, Emmanuel has more recently explored cultivating hybrid varieties, such as the H3 variety presented in this honey processed lot. This hybrid variety is a cross between caturra and an Ethiopian landrace variety from the collection at the Tropical Agricultural Research center known as CATIE, based in Turrialba, Costa Rica. In the cup we taste tangy passionfruit and citrus as well as richly sweet flavors of caramelized nuts and cocoa.

Las Margaritas

F1 Hybrids, such as the H3 featured in this lot, have only recently been available to producers as a result of decades of coffee breeding research. These promising new selections offer additional options to supplement traditional varieties and help address the increasing pressures of pests and diseases resulting from climate change. However, they aren’t without their tradeoffs. Part of what makes F1s so valuable is that a hybrid plant will often exhibit traits superior to either one of the original parents that were crossed to create it. This ‘hybrid vigor,’ however, cannot be reliably reproduced from the seeds of the F1 plant itself, meaning that F1 hybrids are often received and planted by farmers as pre-established seedlings developed at nearby research centers. The H3 variety, in particular, ultimately showed little resistance to leaf rust, but it has remained popular among producers for its unique flavor profile.
